SAP dropped the Sybase name as of January 1st 2014. This was a long anticipated move, but for us long-time Sybase guys it is still a bitter pill to swallow. The Sybase name has been around for over 30 years and now it is gone. Back in the nineties Sybase lost the SQL Server name to Microsoft and had to rename its flagship database to Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE). We all hated it, now it looks like that’s all that we have left.
After SAP bought Sybase the naming changed from Sybase to SAP Sybase. At least Sybase was still part of the name.
The new naming looks like this:
Old | New |
---|---|
SAP Sybase ASE | SAP ASE |
SAP Sybase IQ | SAP IQ |
SAP Sybase Replication Server | SAP Replication Server |
SAP Sybase PowerDesigner | SAP PowerDesigner |
SAP Sybase PowerBuilder | SAP PowerBuilder |
At least the familiar product names have been preserved and “only” the brand name Sybase got chopped.
